MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - When he was hired three weeks ago at Minnesota, Tim Brewster vowed to start bringing big-time recruits to flyover country.
He didn't have to look very far to start making good on the promise.
One of the top recruits of his first class as Gophers coach just happened to live down the hall from him at his Denver home, and Brewster convinced his son Clint, a highly touted quarterback, to ditch his verbal commitment to Illinois and come to Minnesota.
But the energetic coach said it wasn't as easy as it sounds.
``It's a very interesting process with your son,'' Brewster said Wednesday on national signing day. ``He had a tremendous amount of trepidation about coming and playing for me at the U. To be quite honest with you, he didn't want to do it. I didn't want to play against my son.''
Clint Brewster, who starred at J.K. Mullen High School in Denver, originally committed to play for Ron Zook and the Illini, his father's alma mater. That was before Tim Brewster was hired to replace Glen Mason last month.
Had Clint stayed at Illinois, the two Brewsters would have faced each other in Big Ten play, something both wanted to avoid.
``We talked about it before that we'd like to go our separate ways. I'd like to go on my own path,'' Clint Brewster said. ``But he didn't want to have to play against his son. I think that would have been terrible for him and I felt the same way.''
If Brewster would have been hired at another college this year that didn't play in the Big Ten, his son said he would still be going to Illinois.
``That was probably the biggest thing,'' Clint said. ``If I was in a different conference or he was in a different conference, I probably wouldn't be going to Minnesota.''
Still, playing for his father for the first time in his life weighed heavily on the younger Brewster.
``He had definite reservations,'' Tim Brewster said. ``I'm a pain in the butt a little bit. Did he want to go through that head coach/quarterback relationship? That father/son relationship? It takes a special kid to do that.''
The coach took pains to keep things official in recruiting his son, from signing the text messages he sent to Clint with a ``Coach Brew'' instead of ``Dad'' to flying with offensive coordinator Mike Dunbar to Denver for a home visit.
He also offered Mullen defensive back Kyle Theret, Clint's best friend, a scholarship.
``It's just a great situation,'' Clint Brewster said. ``They don't have a returning starter at quarterback, they have what I think is the best defensive coordinator in the nation, there's a lot to be excited about.''
On Wednesday, Brewster declared that every position would be an open competition heading into spring practice and did not rule out his son winning the quarterback job.
``I wanted him to play for me because he is a good football player, not because he was my son,'' Brewster said. ``If he wasn't a good football player, I wouldn't be talking to him.''
Brewster wasn't as successful with one of the other main goals of his recruiting plan - keeping Minnesota talent from leaving the state. Armstrong receiver David Gilreath (Wisconsin), Eden Prairie linebackers Bryce McNaul (Northwestern) and Blake Sorensen (Wisconsin) and Cretin-Derham Hall lineman Broderick Binns (Iowa) all bolted for other Big Ten programs.
With only two weeks to convince them otherwise, it would have been a major coup had Brewster stolen even one of them. He did sign eight Minnesota players, including Northfield defensive lineman Anthony Jacobs.
``There's a kid or two we didn't get, obviously, that we wanted to come,'' Brewster said. ``But we're extremely excited about the kids that are coming here.''
Brewster also hailed Mason for recruiting the vast majority of the players the Gophers signed on Wednesday, particularly gushing about the four offensive linemen Mason lured to Minnesota.
Brewster also got a late commitment from Curtis Thomas, a safety from Abilene, Texas, who originally committed to Kansas State.
``We've got this thing started,'' Brewster said. ``The exciting thing is we're just scratching the surface.''
